The Right to Vote is Not a Joking Matter

The League of Women Voters of Ohio was founded in the fight for women’s right to vote—a fundamental right of democracy. And since then, the League has long sought to encourage all Ohioans to exercise this right, has long sought to ensure that all registered voters have access to the polls, and has long sought to ensure all valid votes are counted.

We have argued against any and all impediments to voting. And we believe that all Ohioans, whatever their political persuasion, would agree that all registered voters should be encouraged and supported in exercising this fundamental right. It is, in our opinion, not a laughing matter.

Television pundit Mike Huckabee apparently disagrees. On October 14th, as reported by masonbuzz.com., Huckabee urged supporters of Issue 2 to “Call [voters] and ask them, ‘Are you going to vote on Issue 2 and are you going to vote for it?’ If they say no, well, you just make sure that they don’t go vote. Let the air out of their tires on Election Day. Tell them the election has been moved to a different date. That’s up to you how you creatively get the job done.”

But in truth, voter suppression is no joke. We urge Mr. Huckabee to join the League in encouraging all Ohioans to exercise their right to vote.
